Ambassador Carlos Joaquín González was appointed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and presented his Letters of Credence to the Right Honourable Mary J. May Simon on March 28, 2023.
He served as Governor of the state of Quintana Roo from 2016 to 2022, focusing on sustainable tourism and obtaining international health and safety certifications during the COVID-19 pandemic to protect jobs and public confidence. Previously, he was Deputy Minister for Tourism Operations, Innovation, and Development at the Ministry of Tourism (2012–2015).
From 2009 to 2012, he served as a federal congressman and chaired the Tourism Committee. He was also Mayor of Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen) from 2005 to 2008 and President of the Association of Coastal Municipalities of Mexico. Earlier roles include Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo (2005–2006) and Municipal Treasurer of Solidaridad (2002–2005).
Before his public service career, he worked in the communication and tourism sectors. His experience has supported the integration of Mexican foreign policy with global priorities such as sustainable development, environmental protection, investment, and culture.
He holds a degree in Public Accounting from the Autonomous University of Yucatán and a specialization in Top Management from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education.
