Animal Security Economist & One Health Policy Expert

Guillaume Lhermie trained first as a veterinarian, then spent nearly a decade in the pharmaceutical industry while returning to academia to pursue graduate degrees in agricultural economics and political science. The combination of clinical, commercial, and analytical experience shapes his research that is equally at home in a peer-reviewed journal and a policy briefing room. At the intersection of food systems, infectious disease, and public policy, Guillaume’s work is focused on what happens when the health of animals, people, and economies converge, and the cost of getting it wrong.

He is a professor at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and directs both Animal Affairs, a hub advancing policies for animals, and the Science to Policy at the United Nations Hub at the university. He advises the WHO, FAO, and WOAH on the economics of antimicrobial resistance and pandemic preparedness and sits on the executive committee of the Global Burden of Animal Diseases (GBADs) program. His work has taken him from livestock farms in sub-Saharan Africa to the institutions that set global health policy.

In Canada, he writes and speaks on One Health through CBC Radio-Canada and other mainstream outlets. His current focus is what food sovereignty, national resilience, and pandemic risk look like when you do the economics rigorously, and what the numbers say about where Canada stands. Animal health is not a niche concern. It sits at the foundation of food security, pandemic preparedness, and national resilience, and the cost of underinvesting in it is rarely visible until it’s too late..
